Hubie Halloween (PG-13), on Netflix

This came out in 2020, but I didn't see it until 2025. For the most part, I found it reasonably entertaining.
Adam Sandler plays Hubie Dubois, who I think is a rather interesting character. He has an annoying voice (which I've heard Sandler affect before), and is generally sort of weird, and ridiculously easily prone to being scared by just about anything. He's also very kind-hearted, and he has a weirdly (and comically) cool "Swiss army thermos", which not only holds soup, but many useful gadgets. It's quite impossible, of course, but in movies, anything is possible. He's also hated by almost everyone in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts. People are almost constantly throwing various objects at him, but he's used to it, so he's very good at dodging. The one person, aside from Hubie's mother, who really likes him is Violet Valentine (Julie Bowen). It's obvious she and Hubie have romantic feelings for each other, but they both seem oblivious to the fact that their feelings are reciprocated.
The movie has a rather large ensemble cast. There are a couple of cops named Downey (Kevin James) and Blake (Kenan Thompson), who Hubie frequently annoys with his attempts to provide information about potential crimes. (Downey is Violet's ex-husband.) Violet has three foster kids, including a son named Tommy and daughters Danielle and Cooky (the girls are played by Sandler's daughters). There's a guy named Pete (Ray Liotta) who enjoys tormenting Hubie. Other tormenters include Lester (Tim Meadows) and his wife, Mary (Maya Rudolph); Lester and Mary don't really get along with each other, aside from their shared enjoyment of tormenting Hubie. There's a priest named Father Dave (Michael Chiklis) who doesn't so much torment Hubie, but he is always annoyed by Hubie. Hubie has a teenage coworker at a deli named Mike, who also torments him. And there are any number of other minor characters, including kids who torment Hubie (the main one being a boy named Adam O'Doyle). Throughout the movie, we also occasionally hear a radio DJ named Aurora.
The day before Halloween, Hubie and his mother get a new neighbor named Walter Lambert (Steve Buscemi), who seems nice, but may be a werewolf. And at the start of the film, a mental patient (and childhood friend of Hubie's) named Richie Hartman escapes from a mental institution. So Sgt. Downey is rather worried about that, but he has plenty of other things to worry about, too. And every Halloween, Hubie rides his bicycle around town as a "volunteer helper", who tries to keep everyone safe (which seems a bit counterintuitive to me, considering how easily scared he is). Meanwhile, Tommy makes a connection with a girl he likes named Megan (who is an upperclassman at his school). Tommy and Megan eventually help Hubie try to protect the town when people start disappearing. We also occasionally see through the eyes of someone who is apparently wearing a jack-o-lantern mask, and is presumably the one abducting people. There is some speculation that Walter or Richie might be doing it, but the truth isn't revealed until near the end of the movie, of course.
Well, a lot of stuff happens in the movie, and I don't want to give away any more details. But I found the movie mostly fun and amusing, even if it's not really great. It has its problems, but... overall I liked it.
