"Weird weird," as opposed to "funny weird" ("weird2" is not "second tier weird").
Let's begin...
Max Headroom, ABC
IMDb; TV Tome
I never got a chance to see this originally, and the few reruns I've seen over the years have been rather scattered, out of order. I don't know if I've seen all of them, but I doubt it. Though there aren't many eps, anyway. It's a strange show and hard to describe. It's set 20 minutes into the future. Edison Carter (played by Matt Frewer, one of the coolest and funniest actors ever) is a reporter for Network 23, which seems to be owned, I think, or at least heavily influenced by the ZikZak Corporation, which is kind of evil or anyway... none too reputable. Edison works with a controller, Theora. We like Theora, played by Amanda Pays, who would later be in The Flash (see superhero shows). Also there's a young computer genius named Bryce, who in the pilot made a copy of Edison's memories and downloaded them into a computer system, from which was created Max Headroom, a digitized version of Edison who no one can control and who is always popping up on TVs pretty much everywhere to tell anyone watching exactly what he thinks about things. He's rather unique, that Max. And just because he has Edison's memories doesn't mean they have the same personality. Not even close, except that they both seem to be against evil, and want to inform the public of such things. Anyway, Edison is constantly going after news stories, trying to expose all kinds of corruption and bad stuff and whatnot, even if it's not always in the best interests of his own network. Yes, a very strange, bizarre, odd, weird, strange sort of a show, kind of surreal, kind of postapocalyptic, kind of funny, and nearly impossible to follow or really understand. But still truly great. The concepts, though bizarre, were, yes, great. And the acting was great. I think. But the writing was often kind of stupid, when it was trying to be futuristic and/or funny and/or confusing. But only occasionally. More or less. Anyway....
Ned Blessing: The Story of My Life and Times, CBS
This was a very brief series. A western, a very bizarre kind of show. I don't remember it well, but I'd love to see it again. A weird town with weird people. I don't know what to say. It was just weird. And really cool. We liked the Wren.
The Prisoner, British
BBC America; IMDb
A secret agent quit his job. Someone wants to know why. So he was kidnapped and sent to an island on which lies the Village. Everyone there has a number. The agent is called Number 6. There is a new Number 2 each week in charge of the Village. Among his duties is to try to get information from Number 6. He always fails. Number 6 seems to be about the only resident of the Village who doesn't go along with things. They're all prisoners there, for one reason or another, but they don't seem to care. Number 6 doesn't want to conform, he wants to escape. He wants to find out who's responsible for all this. The series is very clever, very inventive and original and bizarre and confusing and one of the best shows ever. You definitely have to see it. Number 6 is played by Patrick McGoohan, who played the same character (but with a real name instead of a number) in maybe a couple of other shows I've never had a chance to see, but would really love to someday.
...Which I'm pretty sure was a FOX show... Anyway, it only ran for a few episodes, despite being one of the most brilliant shows ever. It was truly twisted and bizarre. The main character was Jim Profit, who was clearly insane, but doing his best to climb the corporate ladder by any means at his disposal. Anyway, I don't remember the show well at all, but it really should have lasted longer. I guess it was just too dark and disturbing for most people. Some folks just don't like a good evil twisted insane person to be the main character of a show. Go figure.
