Let's begin...
American Dad!, FOX, Sundays 8:30pm
Adult Swim; FOX; Hulu; IMDb; Toonarific; TV.com; Wikipedia
This comes from Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy (cartoons 3). It's about Stan Smith, who works for the CIA; his wife Francine; their kids, Hayley and Steve; an alien named Roger, who lives with them; and a goldfish named Klaus, which has the brain of a German man transplanted into it. I more or less think it's a fairly stupid show, not nearly as good as Family Guy. And I really don't like Stan, who's like one of those people who take patriotism to the level of nationalism, and in so doing entirely lose sight of what it truly means to be American. Plus, of course, he's like hyper-right-wing (while I'm more moderate, leaning toward the left). Seriously, I think this guy would be more at home in the McCarthy era, but then again, there are similarities between then and the post 9-11 era, I suppose. But hey, Stan's attitude is basically the whole point of the show. His personality is the joke. I just don't find it that funny.
Not that this show is really about politics, of course. It's just about this dad trying to deal with his family and stuff. And being pretty over the top overbearing, controlling... I dunno. Anyway, I guess the show has occasional, mildly amusing moments, but for the most part I don't like it. Really, I don't particularly like any of the characters, but Stan's the one I dislike the most. Still, I keep watching, because... I dunno, it can be okay, I guess. And, it's part of FOX's whole Sunday night "Animation Domination" lineup, or whatever....
The Oblongs, WB
Adult Swim; IMDb; Toonarific; TV.com; Voice Chasers; Wikipedia
Sick, twisted, insane, and occasionally kinda funny. The main character is Milo Oblong, who lives in the Valley. Everyone there is rather poor, and the whole place seems to be run-down and contaminated, leading to all sorts of physical and sometimes mental abnormalities in the locals. All the rich people live in the Hills. They seem kinda freakish to me, in their own way, but less obviously so than the Valley people. Anyway, the show's okay, I guess, but not great. I like Milo's friend Creepy Susie, the cynical, depressed, kind of gothic French girl. And most of the voices on this show are familiar from other stuff....
SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon
IMDb; Nickelodeon; Toonarific; TV.com; Wikipedia; YTV
I haven't seen too much of this, really. I tried watching it a few times because it's so popular, though. It can be rather dumb and annoying, but it also has some laughs, and some clever moments. It can certainly appeal to adults as well as kids, which is nice. But it just hasn't caught my interest that much. Anyway, there's a bunch of sea critters like the title character, a sea sponge in a state of arrested development; his best friend Patrick Star, a really really dumb starfish; Squidward Tentacles (who can't stand SpongeBob, though SpongeBob doesn't seem to realize this); and Mr. Eugene Krabs (SpongeBob and Squidward's boss at a burger joint called the Krusty Krab). And there's a squirrel (land critter) named Sandy Cheeks, who I think is from Texas or something, who moved underwater for some reason. She lives in a dome filled with air and when she goes out she wears a diving suit. Oh, and SpongeBob has a pet snail named Gary, who meows. Um... they all live in a town called Bikini Bottom. And then there's Sheldon J. Plankton, who's constantly trying to steal the formula for Mr. Krabs' Krabby Patty, to attract customers to his own restaurant, The Chum Bucket, as part of a scheme to take over the world, or something. But his plans always fail and he just ends up getting stepped on all the time. I dunno what else to say about the show. But it's not bad, in small doses.
