tek's fairly well-liked animated shows

Let's begin...

Aladdin, CBS
IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

Reruns on Toon Disney.
Disney series based on the movie of the same name (IMDb; Movie Tome). This street rat (figuratively speaking) Aladdin and his pet moneky Abu get mixed up with a genie and royalty and magic, and they fight villains and stuff. It was cool. And of course, Jasmine was cute, as with most modern Disney heroines. Actually, there was a bit in the theme that I always thought was amusing, where it would come to the words "...Arabian nights, like Arabian days, more often than not are hotter than hot, in a lot of good ways..." And at those words, "alot of good ways," we see Jasmine... and I grin at the thought of just what sort of good ways Aladdin's nights may be hot. ...Anyway, what else? Iago the parrot is funny, and has an interesting friendship with Abu. Mirage was a cool villain. Dunno what else to say, but it was a fairly fun show, I guess.

Family Guy, FOX, Sundays 9pm
Adult Swim; IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome

Reruns on Cartoon Network and TBS.
This show could be pretty damn hilarious at times, but it also had episodes I thought were just stupid and annoying, maybe even a bit offensive. I do find I'm liking it better in reruns than I did originally, though. Anyway, the main characters are the Griffins, Peter and Lois, and their kids, Chris (played by Seth Green, one of my favorite actors), Meg (played by Mila Kunis, and I like her better in this than in "That 70's Show"), and the evil genius baby, Stewie, and the talking dog, Brian. The best things about the show were always Stewie and Brian. Also I kind of liked some of the flashbacks and fantasy sequences and stuff like that. Some pop culture references and all kinds of things... could be quite funny. Let's see, what else? The Griffins have some weird friends and stuff. Patrick Warburton does one of the voices. Um, and Adam West is in the show sometimes, as the mayor of Quahog, Rhode Island, where the show is set. Hmmm, I guess I dunno what else to say. ...Except that due to the show's popularity on Adult Swim and DVD, FOX brought it back for a new season a few years after it was cancelled. That's pretty cool.

Fillmore!, ABC
IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

It's like a 70's cop show, except the "cops" are middle school kids. The title character is Cornelius Fillmore, who used to be a troublemaker, but is now an agent of X Middle School's Safety Patrol. His partner is the new kid in town, Ingrid Third. I quite like her, mainly cuz of her goth look. Their boss is Jr. Commissioner Vallejo, who is often irritated by Fillmore. Other Safety Patrol officers include Tehama (forensics), O'Farrell (photographer), and Anza. Of course they all ultimately answer to Principal Folsom, who is chiefly concerned with the school's image. Oh, and there are alot of chase scenes. Hmmm, not sure what else to say, but... I think it's a pretty cool show, and funny, and stuff. I quite enjoy it.

Gary the Rat, TNN
IMDb; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

This was part of TNN's new animation lineup for adults on Thursday nights, around the time the network's name changed to Spike TV. The show moved to Fridays for awhile, then it was off the air for awhile, then it moved to Tuesdays. Then it went off the air again. Anyway, it's about this sleazy lawyer named Gary Andrews, who turned into a giant rat (voice of Kelsey Grammer). There's an exterminator named Johnny who has been hired by Gary's landlord to kill Gary, though he always ends up killing somebody else by mistake. Johnny has a cat named Boots, who is his best friend. Gary has a boss named Mr. Harrison. I can't think of anything else to tell you, but it's all reasonably amusing. Wish it woulda lasted longer.

The Little Mermaid, CBS
IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

Reruns on Toon Disney.
The series served as a prequel to the movie of the same name (IMDb; Movie Tome). In the movie, this mermaid princess named Ariel was 16. In the series, she started out at age 14 I think. Anyway, I guess I never saw all of this, but alot of it. And it was pretty decent. Funny, some good music and stuff. And we have always loved Ariel. Sebastian was cool, too. So, Ariel had this adventurous spirit, yes, always off on some adventure, much to the dismay of her father, King Triton. She had a fish friend named Flounder, and Sebastian was a crab who worked for her father and was supposed to look after her, but he couldn't stop her from getting into trouble all the time. Also she had a dangerous obsession with humans.

Mission Hill, WB
Adult Swim; IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome

So anyway, there's this guy, Andy French, who wants to be a cartoonist. And he has a couple weird roommates, Jim and Posey, and a weird dog named Stogie, and his parents send his weird little brother Kevin to stay with him for awhile. And it's just a kinda weird show. It's funny, but I dunno what else to say about it. Cake did the theme music.

Pinky and the Brain, WB
IMDb; In2TV; Toonarific; TV.com; Voice Chasers; Wikipedia

Listen, I haven't seen as much of this as I should have, and I'm sorry about that. Anyway, so we have these lab mice at Acme Labs. Pinky, who is stupid and crazy and funny. And the Brain, who is brilliant and wants to take over the world and is always annoyed at Pinky, his friend and assistant. He always has some brilliant and crazy plan to take over the world. It's all really clever and funny and you need to watch it, so there! Narf!

The Raccoons, Canadian
IMDb; Retro Junk; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

What oh what to say? This takes place in the Evergreen Forest. You have Bert Raccoon who's kind of nuts and foolhardy and adventurous. And his friends Ralph and Melissa. And Schaeffer the dog. And Cyril Sneer the rich aardvark who's kind of evil but eventually he turns out not to be entirely so. He has a son named Cedric who's friends with the raccoons, a good guy. And there's other characters and silly things happen and stuff. There's three pigs who work for Cyril. Gosh, I dunno what to say! Um... Ralph and Melissa run a newspaper. Um... yeah, well, stuff happens. Okay? Oh yeah, and I liked the end theme song, "Run With Us," by Lisa Lougheed.

Science Court
IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome

This was one of them there Squiggle-vision type cartoons (from the folks what brought you such classics as Dr. Katz and Home Movies). But it was for kids, an educational show. There were these court cases involving science or whatever. Um, I don't really know what to say about it. It was really quite funny, though. I'm afraid I didn't get to see alot of it.

Sealab 2021, Cartoon Network
Adult Swim; IMDb; TV.com

It's a stupid but sometimes hilarious show. Really crazy. Set in an underwater research facility. Most of the characters are really stupid and incompetent and they really don't care. And those that aren't stupid are still insane and stuff. Except maybe for Dr. Quinn. There isn't really a plot, and the writers know it. That's what's so great about it. Also the theme song, by Calamine, totally rocks. Um, oh... I guess it's vaguely based on some old show called Sealab 2020 (IMDb; TV.com), which I've never seen. Maybe I'll check it out one of these days... but probably not. Anyway, the quality of Sealab 2021 eventually declined, causing me to move it to a lower tier, I'm afraid....

Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (CG animation), MTV
IMDb; Sony Pictures; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

Not sure what to say about this. It's about Spider-Man, and of course his alter-ego Peter Parker, and his friends Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn. They're in college. I think it's supposed to follow the events of the live-action movie (IMDb; Movie Tome). The show isn't too bad, but it's not great, either. Can't think what else to tell you....

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, CBS
IMDb; official website; Retro Junk; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

This show was okay. Could be funny and stuff. I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of it again someday. Yeah, totally... But I dunno what to say about it. You've probably at least heard of TMNT. Anyway... there was this rat who was the pet of a ninja master, and he watched him train, and thereby learned ninjitsu himself. Later the rat ended up in the sewers of New York city, where he and four turtles were mutated by nuclear waste, growing to roughly man-size, and becoming intelligent. The rat, whose name was Splinter, named the turtles Raphael, Leonardo, Michaelangelo, and Donatello, and began training them to be ninjas. Then the four of them at some point went out and started to fight crime and stuff, though they definitely have the personalities of teenagers, especially Mikey. They make some friends like a reporter named April O'Neil, and a vigilante named Casey Jones, etc. They also make enemies, such as Shredder and his Foot ninjas. And they have lots of wacky adventures. That's about all I can think to tell you. Except... I guess all this started out as comix or whatever. I think people say they were alot different and more serious and much better, and stuff. But I never got a chance to read them.
See also the live-action movies Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IMDb; Movie Tome), TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze (IMDb; Movie Tome), and TMNT III (IMDb; Movie Tome). I haven't seen the third one yet, though.

Totally Spies!, French, Cartoon Network
Absolute Anime; Cartoon Network; IMDb; Jetix UK; official website; Toonarific; TV.com; Voice Chasers; Wikipedia; WOOHP (fansite)

Originally aired in the U.S. on ABC Family Channel, later got picked up by Cartoon Network. This show is very anime-ish, but also very American. Well, okay, it's very sort of... French perspective of American, I guess. Anyway, it's a funny and cute show, even if it's basically silly and, you know, not that good, per se... it's still pretty fun. It's about these three high school girls who live in Beverly Hills: Clover, Sam, and Alex (all of whom we like, especially Sam). They have normal lives and interests, though these things are constantly being abruptly interrupted by their secret job as international spies for WOOHP (the World Organization Of Human Protection). The head of WOOHP is a guy named Jerry, who always gives the girls gadgets when he assigns them their missions.

Sam's the smartest and most sensible, responsible one. Alex seems to be the sweet, naive one. Clover's the most stereotypically Valley Girl one, I'd say, totally into shopping and boys and whatever. Though they're all into such things, especially boys. And Clover has this Betty and Veronica type rivalry going on with a totally snobby girl at school named Mandy. (I think she eventually becomes a spy too, but I haven't seen alot of the later episodes.) Not sure what else to say, but I enjoy the show well enough, when I bother to watch it. Also I kinda like the theme song, though I pretty rarely hear it actually played; more often they seem to just play the music without any lyrics, for some reason.

The Venture Bros., Cartoon Network
Adult Swim; IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome; Voice Chasers

Okay. This is a sort of spoof of the old Johnny Quest cartoon, which I haven't seen nearly enough of to appreciate. It's also a spoof of the Hardy Boys, I guess. Anyway, it's funny. There's this scientist named Dr. Venture, who travels around with his sons Hank and Dean, and a bodyguard named Brock Samson, and a robot named H.E.L.P.eR. They sometimes have to face villains like the Monarch, who considers Venture his archnemesis. Or sometimes they're just having an average day, but Hank and Dean turn it into an adventure in their own minds, cuz they always think there's some enemy to face. They're pretty stupid, and annoying. And Dr. Venture doesn't like them or much of anything about his life. And Brock doesn't seem to like anything except fighting bad guys and having sex with whatever woman is in the episode that week. It's um... not a great show, in my estimation, but it's not bad, either. It reminds me a bit of Harvey Birdman (see toons 6), but toned down, less random and ludicrous, and certainly funnier. At any rate... it started out tolerable, and it's grown on me, somewhat. Oh, and the Ventures have a neighbor named Dr. Orpheus, who is a necromancer. He has a daughter named Triana, who he calls "Pumpkin," and Dean has a crush on her. We kinda like her, too, being a bit gothy...

Wing Commander Academy, USA
IMDb; Toonarific; TV Tome

Based on a series of computer games I've never had a chance to play. And I don't remember the show much, but I liked it. Pretty cool space dogfights between the Terrans and the Kilrathi, who make for interesting enemies, and we get a bit of a look at their culture.... I think it would've been on a higher tier while it was on.

X-Men: Evolution, WB
IMDb; Toonami UK; Toonarific; TV.com; Voice Chasers; Wikipedia

Not a great show, and not bad, either. Sometimes it's pretty damn good actually. Anyway, a bunch of mutants. Based on the comix. Different groups of mutants, some good, some evil. Kind of complicated, shifting allegiances and stuff. At the end of the first season, the existence of mutants becomes public knowledge, so the second season deals with discrimination alot of the time.
