talk/news shows

Let's begin...

The Colbert Report, Comedy Central, Mon-Thu 11:30pm
The Colbert Nation (fansite?); Comedy Central; IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia

The title, I think, isn't supposed to have an accented "e" in "Report," although it's pronounced as if it does, as well as a silent "t" at the end. So that it sounds like the name "Colbert." I should also say that that Colbert Nation link is billed as a fan site, but I'm pretty sure it's actually an official site that's pretending to be a fan site.

Anyway, we all know and love Stephen Colbert from The Daily Show (see lower this page). So now he's got his own show, following it. Like a continuation of the show where he's the host instead of Jon Stewart. Which kind of reminds me of the way one dream can segue into another and you're not entirely sure if it's really a new dream or the same one, but somehow it's different... But I digress. It is a different show. It's a pundit show, or a parody of a pundit show, the way The Daily Show is a parody of news talk shows or whatever. I've never been interested in pundit shows, really. But this is funny. So I need to try to watch it more often. And that's all I can think to say for now.

Conversations From the Edge with Carrie Fisher, Oxygen
IMDb; TV Tome

I haven't seen much of this, never a whole episode, and rarely even stumble across bits and pieces. But I mean, come on, it's Carrie Fisher! We like her. Alot. So it's definitely worth checking this show out.

The Daily Show, Comedy Central, Mon-Thu 11pm (plus alot of reruns the next day)
Comedy Central; IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia

Originally hosted by Craig Kilborn, who was pretty funny, but sometimes perhaps just a wee bit annoying and, you know, smarmy. (He later got his own talk show on CBS, The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn; see lower this page.) Currently The Daily Show is hosted by Jon Stewart, who I find funnier than Craig Kilborn, and not annoying. Anyway, this is the best show for learning about what's going on in the world, unless of course you actually want to, like, watch the news or something. But why the hell would you wanna do that? Anyway, this show is terribly funny. Also they get good guests on there. And they have good segments done by the other people who work on the show, who are also quite funny. I dunno what else to say, but um... it's just really good and you absolutely have to watch it. Y'know, not necessarily on a daily basis, or anything. But sometimes. I should also say that one of the correspondents, Stephen Colbert, has spun off his own series, The Colbert Report (see higher this page).

Fox After Breakfast, FOX
IMDb; TV Tome

This was a morning talk show which wasn't much like any other. This show was unbelievably cool, when it started out. Actually, it was sort of... a reincarnation of Breakfast Time (IMDb), which had been on fX. Which I never got to see. Anyway, FOX AB was originally hosted by Tom Bergeron, Laurie Hibberd (oh, we like her), and Bob the Puppet. It was just a very sort of odd, quirky, hilarious, fun fun fun, cool show. Bob was one of the best sock puppets in history. I can't tell you how much I miss this show. I didn't even get to see it very often, but when I did, I adored it. But then the hosts started leaving, and they tried different guest hosts for awhile, and finally settled on Vicki Lawrence, and it was never very good after Tom, Laurie, and Bob were gone.

FTL Newsfeed, Sci-Fi Channel
no IMDb or TV Tome entry

I didn't see much of this, but I really wish I could see the whole thing sometime. It was just this little thing that'd come on at odd times and last like a few minutes maybe, just little flashes of news which were set 150 years in the future. There was a whole story developing throughout the course of these flashes... and I don't really know what else to say. But there was a slide-puzzle to solve on the scifi.com website, which if you completed you won a screensaver, which I did in college and saved to disk, but later lost, and now you can't get it anymore, and I wish I could, even though I never seem to actually use any screensavers these days.... I suppose I should put this under sci-fi instead of news, but... I choose not to. So there.

Jimmy Kimmel Live, ABC, weeknights 12:05am
IMDb; TV Tome

I never watch this. I hardly ever even stop on it for a minute while channel surfing. Come to think of it, I'm hardly ever up this late, anymore. But I know he sometimes has decent guests on who I wouldn't mind watching for a few minutes, conceivably. Anyway, before this, Jimmy was on "The Man Show," which I would never even consider watching. Before that, he was on "Win Ben Stein's Money" (see variety, game shows, etc), which was one of my favorite game shows ever. Okay, that's all I have to say.

The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, CBS, weeknights 12:35am
IMDb; TV Tome

I haven't seen alot of this. I never liked it as well as Conan O'Brien, anyway. And I don't think Craig's as good in this as he was when he hosted the Daily Show. But I guess this can be okay at times. Anyway, Craig replaced Tom Snyder after his show got cancelled or whatever.

The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder, CBS
IMDb; TV Tome

I think before this ever came out, Dave Letterman was on like the Larry Sanders Show or something, and someone asked him who he was gonna get to do a show after his, and he joked "Tom Snyder," but then he actually got him to do this show for real. Anyway, it was um... I dunno what to say. I sometimes liked it, but that's probably because I was so tired at that time of night. Or maybe it was just kinda kitschy or something. Tom was just this sort of old guy who rambled alot. It was funny. I think he got some good guests on there, though. It was certainly always amusing to watch him chatting with hip young celebrities and whatnot....

Late Night with Conan O'Brien, NBC, weeknights 12:35am
IMDb; TV Tome

Reruns on Comedy Central, weeknights at 6pm
This is probably my favorite talk show, I mean unless you count the Daily Show. Or Space Ghost. When it first started, I didn't have NBC, and could only occasionally watch it over at a friend's house, but we both loved it. This is when it was still being critically panned, so we were cool to realize how cool it was, so early. Weren't we? Anyway, now I have the chance to watch it pretty much every night, but I rarely do anymore. I still like it alot, though. Kinda miss Andy Richter. Um, dunno what else to say. Oh yeah, Conan and Leonard Nimoy and I were all born in the same hospital in Boston, did you know that? I learned that one night while watching the show when I was in college.

The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS, weeknights 11:35pm
IMDb; TV Tome

Prior to this, I never had a chance to watch a late night talk show. Unless you count something like the Pat Sajak Show, and if you're going to count that, you'll be automatically banned from my TV show pages. Anyway, you know, back when this came on, the only major network I had access to was CBS. So I was excited when this show started, and I enjoyed it, and watched it fairly often for the first few years. I hardly ever watch it anymore, but it's still okay, I guess.

Politically Incorrect, Comedy Central/ABC
IMDb; TV Tome

Originally on Comedy Central, this later moved to ABC. It was hosted by Bill Maher. I never watched too much of the show. Bill could be funny, but then he could also annoy the crap out of me. Anyway, he'd also have a guest panel each night with four different celebrities or other people in the public eye, or whatever, and they'd all talk about current issues and whatnot. It drove me crazy whenever I'd tune in, cuz often I'd want to say things, but I wouldn't have been able to even if I'd actually been on the show. It is impossible to say anything on that show without interrupting, and I can't bear to interrupt. By the time there's half a moment's silence, the conversation will have long since shifted away from what I would have commented upon. Plus, no one ever really gets a chance to finish what they're saying. And there's really not much room for rebuttal, or give and take. It's too chaotic for any truly meaningful discussion. And I don't really now what else to say. Like I said, I didn't watch it much....

Rotten Television, VH1
IMDb

This was a show hosted (if hosted is the right word) by John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten. I think there were supposed to be something like 11 episodes, maybe. It wasn't really a regular series, anyway. It's just something that John seemed to do whenever he got around to making an installment, I guess. I've seen maybe one and a half episodes, and I'm not sure if he actually made any more than those two. I certainly don't think it could be more than three. In any event, it was just basically John as himself, talking about whatever was on his mind, I guess. It's an interesting mind he's got, and there's alot I respect about the guy's take on life and the world. I might disagree on some things, and I doubt he'd like me at all, but I think for the most part he's pretty cool. And he pretty well sees through all the sham of... pretty much everything, I guess. Anyway, since he did talk with celebrities a bit, while just like wandering around or whatever, and certainly talked alot himself, I guess I'll put this on the talk shows page, though I don't think this show can strictly be defined as such, nor really be put into any specific category. I can't think what else to say, just at the moment.

Sci-Fi Buzz, Sci-Fi Channel
no IMDb or TV Tome entry

This show um... well, I didn't see as much of it as I should have, but anyway it was cool. Lots of news about sci-fi stuff and whatnot. Plus there was a segment where Harlan Ellison would just rant about stuff, which was really cool. I really wish this would still be on, and that I would have used to seen more of it.

Sci-Fi Entertainment, Sci-Fi Channel
no IMDb or TV Tome entry

I barely remember this. And I don't think it was very good. All I can really tell you for sure is it was co-hosted by Chase Masterson, who played Leeta on Deep Space Nine. And we like her. Anyway, just one more show about stuff going on in the world of sci-fi, pretty much redundant, considering all the other shows SFC has had on like Sci-Fi Buzz, which was better than this, anyway.

Soledad O'Brien

We like her. She is not a show, obviously. I guess she was on ZDTV for awhile, though I doubt I ever got to see that, and I don't think the network even exists anymore, but I could be wrong. I know she was on MSNBC for awhile, though I never got to see her much on that, whatever show she was on. But like I said, I really liked her. Later she was on some weekend morning news show on NBC or something like that, but I never really got to see it much, whatever it was. Currently she's on CNN, which I rarely watch, but just as long as she's somewhere on the TV, I'm happy, even if I only rarely see her for a minute while channel surfing. Okay?

Space Ghost Coast to Coast

See: ekt's favorite cartoons. This is the best talk show in the history of the universe.

Squirt TV on MTV
IMDb; TV Tome ?

Talk show hosted by this kid Jake Fogelnest, from like his bedroom. Originally a cable access show, though of course I never saw it until it came to MTV. It was funny, and he had some cool guests. I remember Janeane Garofalo being there once, and the band Cibo Matto. I quite enjoyed this show. Didn't last long, though. I miss it.

Switchback, Canadian
IMDb ?

Well, I'll have to assume this IMDb entry is for the show I remember. I dunno. The info's too sparse to say for sure. Now the host I remember was named Stan Johnson, and he's not listed there, so maybe this is something different. Oh well, I don't remember the show that well, anyway. Um... used to be on Sunday mornings when I was a kid. There'd be this host, whoever he was. He sat at this desk. Um. There was a stuffed animal, which was a dog named Rufus. Right? And there was also a guy in a gorilla suit. And um... the host would like talk about stuff or whatever. Also there'd be letters from viewers, generally with some kind of contest to draw pictures or whatever on the back of the envelope. Or front? I dunno, whichever side you don't write the address on, I guess. Also there'd be little snippets of old shows like say Batman or Get Smart, I think. I dunno what else to say. It was kinda fun, something to do while waiting for Mom to get ready to go to church. Then I'd have to turn off the TV and go to church before the show was over. I dunno, I think it was like an hour and a half or something. Anyway, it was like um... weird, kind of um... cheap and unprofessional and stuff. I liked it.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, NBC, 11:35pm
IMDb; TV Tome

I never got NBC until after Johnny had retired, so this is the only Tonight Show I've ever had the chance to see. I don't watch it much, but it's okay. I think I prefer Letterman, but I probably prefer late late night shows better than late night shows.
