tek's middlin' well-liked comedy shows
(caution: potential spoilers)

Let's begin...

Absolutely Fabulous, British
BBC America; IMDb; TV.com

Sometimes reruns on BBC America.
Ab Fab is um... yeah, well, um... funny, and stuff. You have best friends Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone. They live a rather lush life, which I mean in at least two different ways. Well anyway, they're both quite self-involved and spoiled and childish and stuff. Patsy is also very rude and crude and pretty much responsible for leading Eddy down the dark path. Eddy has a daughter, Saffron, who is much more sensible and very smart, bit of a prude. Saffy and Patsy hate each other. Saffy is often very annoyed at and embarrassed by her mother. And Eddy doesn't really get Saffy, but she does love her. Um, we really like Saffron; we're just mad about her, in fact.... But anyway, it's a really funny show and that's about all I can say about it. Except that it would probably be best if you were drunk or high or something while you watch it.

Arrested Development, FOX, Mondays 8pm
Fox Home; IMDb; TV Tome

It's about this rich, dysfunctional family, the patriarch of which, George Bluth, Sr. (played by Jeffrey Tambor) has just been arrested. The main character is one of his sons, Michael (played by Jason Bateman), who's been waiting a long time to be made head of the family's company, but that doesn't happen immediately, even though he's like the only normal, competent one in his family. But once they realize they're no good at running things, they ask him for help. He takes over, but they continue to make things hard for him, just by being themselves. Anyway, Michael has a sister named Lindsay (played by Portia de Rossi, who we like), who can be a little out there, in some of her... causes. Lindsay is married to Tobias (played by David Cross), who wants to be an actor, but isn't very good at it. They have a daughter called Maeby (played by Alia Shawkat of "State of Grace," who we kinda like). Michael has a son, George Michael, who secretly has a crush on Maeby and is always trying to impress her. Michael's brothers include Gob (pronounced "Jobe"), an out of work magician; and Buster, a man-child who lives with their mother, Lucille. The series is narrated by exec producer Ron Howard. George Sr.'s incompetent lawyer is played by Henry Winkler. And that's all I can think to say, for now. Except it's a fairly smart and amusing show, even if I don't like it quite as much as the critics.

Cheers, NBC
IMDb; Retro Junk; TV.com; TV Land; Wikipedia

Anyway, it used to be a pretty fun show with a good cast and it was funny and um... chances are you know what it was about. Man, look at me not describe it! Ha! Anyway, probably an overrated show, but still pretty fun most of the time, a real classic. Though I'm not really interested in seeing the reruns much, it was a favorite when it was first-run. And I'm glad I can watch reruns if I'm ever in the mood.

The Cosby Show, NBC
IMDb; Retro Junk; TV Tome

Reruns on Nickelodeon.
Well here's a comfortable old show, one of the really great shows of... ever... or something. I mean, nothing particularly brilliant or anything, but it was funny, and it was homey, and comfortable as I say. Plenty of memorable characters. Another classic. Starred Bill Cosby, of course, as Cliff Huxtable, an obstetrician. And his family. I dunno what else to say, really.

Doctor Doctor
IMDb; TV Tome

This was a fairly funny show about four doctors who had their own small New England medical practice. The best character of course was Mike, played by Matt Frewer, who is one of the funniest actors ever. Mike was just nuts. Also wrote a book and cohosted a morning talk show or something. The other doctors were Abe, Grant, and Dierdre. We like Dierdre. Hmmm, dunno what else to say about the show except I'd really like to see it again sometime.

Evening Shade, CBS
IMDb; TV Tome

This was a really funny show with such an incredible cast. They were all great. We certainly like Ava and Fontana. And it was a cute and funny and comfortable little show, great characters, very sort of odd and charming and fun. And I don't know what else to say about it, I can't even think of any kind of basic plot or anything. It was just this town full of sort of interesting, funny people, and stuff happened, or whatever. I dunno. It was good. I'm rather tempted to put this in quirky category....

Everybody Loves Raymond, CBS
IMDb; King World; TV Tome

Funny show and all that. Robert is prob'ly my favorite character. We definitely like Debra. Um... so, Ray and Debra and their kids live next door to Ray's annoying parents, and most of the time Ray's brother Robert seems to live with the parents, too. Dunno what else to say.

Kate & Allie
IMDb; TV Tome

This was a fun and funny little show, about a couple of divorced mothers who were friends and roommates living and raising their kids together. Kate had a daughter named Emma, who we liked. Allie had a daughter named Jennie and a younger son named Chip. I guess Emma and Jennie became best friends. Um. I don't really know what to say about the show, just that I quite liked it.

The Larry Sanders Show, HBO
IMDb; TV Tome

I saw some of this. It was on HBO, which I don't get, but for awhile it was on CBC. And now it reruns on various channels like FOX or the WB, though I think that's just local syndication, even if it is in alot of markets. Anyway, I've seen some of it, and it was pretty good. It was funny, it had a good cast, and stuff. It's about a late night talk show host named Larry Sanders. We get to see behind the scenes. Hilarity ensues. I really should try to watch the reruns once in awhile... but actually I do think it was a bit overrated.

Love & War, CBS
IMDb; TV Tome

There was this little restaurant full of these funny people. Jay Thomas was the star, who played Jack Stein, who had some newspaper column, ranting about sports or something, I dunno. In the first season the other main star was Susan Dey, who was like the chef or whatever. But she was later replaced by a different character played by Annie Potts. Also Jack had a couple of friends, one was a garbage man played by Joel Murray, who's been in a bunch of other stuff I liked (including voicing some cartoons); and one was another sports writer. We quite like her. She was played by Suzie Plakson who's been in a few other things, a couple eps of ST:TNG, as well as various eps of Mad About You. Also an ep of Voyager. And there were other people in this show, anyway, and I liked all of them. I liked Joanna Gleason. Anyway, it was a funny show. I dunno what else to say.

Made in Canada, CBC
IMDb; TV Tome

Haven't seen much of it, but it's terribly funny. And we like Veronica. The basic concept is vaguely like "Larry Sanders," in that it takes a satirical look inside the television industry. The show is set at a Canadian TV production company called Pyramid. The main character, Richard (played by Rick Mercer, formerly of "This Hour Has 22 Minutes"), talks in asides to us, the viewers, and he's one of the producers at Pyramid. I really must try to catch this more often, if I can manage to remember when it's on. Might be on a higher tier if I did.

Newhart, CBS
IMDb; TV Tome

I liked this show. I think just about everyone in it was good. Larry, Darryl, and Darryl were certainly pretty funny, and so was Dick. Bob Newhart's always good. And we certainly liked Joanna. What else to say? I dunno. That whole damn town was insane! And stupid. Y'know, in a way this show always kinda reminded me of Fawlty Towers. Hmmm, and that's all I can think to say, now.

The Red Green Show, Canadian
IMDb; TV Tome

Also called "The New Red Green Show." Though I don't even know if they're still making new episodes, but I think maybe so. Anyway, the show's very funny. I don't manage to watch it often, I'm afraid. Um... this guy Red Green is sort of the leader of Possum Lodge. And there are a bunch of odd characters who are members of the lodge. And um, it's like they put on this TV show, which we're watching. And there are various segments and stuff in between pieces of whatever is going on at the lodge in each episode. It's kind of crazy and silly and stupid and strange, and very very funny, did I mention that?
See also the movie Duct Tape Forever (IMDb; Movie Tome), in which the lodge is going to be shut down unless they raise money after getting sued, so they build this bird-thing to enter in a duct tape contest and have to take a road trip to get it to the contest and this evil rich guy has some inept cops chasing them or whatever. Um... it's weird, yeah. But it's got some funny moments....

Seinfeld, NBC
IMDb; Retro Junk; Sony Pictures; TV.com; Wikipedia

Somewhat overrated. I liked it sometimes, though. Starred comedian Jerry Seinfeld as comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Michael Richards as Kramer (probably the funniest of the four main characters, but they could all be funny, of course), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who we like) as Elaine Benes. Anyway, it's supposed to be a show about nothing. Personally I think there are a hell of alot of shows about nothing, but whatever.

Sydney
IMDb; TV Tome

Valerie Bertinelli played the title character, a detective. We liked her. Matthew Perry (Chandler of Friends) played her brother, a cop. And there were plenty of other characters and it was a clever, witty show, quite funny and fast-paced dialog and stuff. Only lasted a season, I don't remember it well, but it was pretty good.

Welcome Back, Kotter
IMDb; In2TV; Retro Junk; TV.com; Wikipedia

This was a pretty funny show. Gabe Kotter went to this school in Brooklyn I guess, when he was a kid, and he was a member of this group of remedial troublemakers called the Sweathogs. Then he grew up and became a teacher and went back to teach at the same school, teaching a new generation of Sweathogs. The main four kids now are Vinnie Barbarino (the leader, who is really vain and the dumbest of them); Arnold Horshack (my favorite Sweathog, who is kind of weird and stuff); Freddie Washington (whose catchphrase was "Hi there"); and Juan Epstein (the Puerto Rican Jew who always had an amusing forged note from his mother). Um, anyway... Mr. Kotter thinks he's a comedian (probably because he's played by one). There's also this vice principal, Mr. Woodman, who doesn't really like any of the sweathogs or Mr. Kotter or much of anything except making people miserable. I guess we kinda like Gabe's wife Julie. And did I mention it's a pretty funny show? Okay, well then that's about all I can say, for now.

WKRP in Cincinatti
IMDb; Retro Junk; TV Tome

A very cool and funny show set in a struggling AM radio station, full of odd, kind of nutty characters. Johnny Fever was probably the best one. But they were all fun characters and it was a great and weird ensemble show and they all worked well off each other. And it was really funny. We definitely liked Bailey, oh yes. But we didn't much care for Jennifer, though.
