anthology shows

Let's begin...

American Playhouse, PBS
IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia

I never watched much of this, but I must've seen the occasional installment. Maybe. I might mention a few of them under "TV plays" on the TV movies & miniseries page.

CBS Summer Playhouse, CBS
IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia

Welp, the links aren't very informative. Heck, Wikipedia didn't even have a page, so I started a little stub. I hope they don't delete it. Anyway, for a few summers, CBS would air unsold pilots. And I enjoyed alot of them. And I can't think what else to say....

Dinner and a Movie, TBS
IMDb; TBS; Wikipedia

I have never watched much of this, in fact I'm not sure I can recall ever having actually watched an entire installment. I probably have, though, I dunno. But nevertheless, I have always thought it is a bloody brilliant concept: They play a movie, and the hosts prepare a dinner that is somehow themed to that movie. Whether I actually watched one of the whole movies they showed or not, I definitely remember often surfing to the channel to see Paul & Annabelle doing their hosting duties. Paul Gilmartin was rather goofy, but amusing. And we seriously liked Annabelle Gurwitch. Oh, and there was a chef, but I don't really remember him, so well.

Exposure, Sci-Fi Channel
IMDb; TV.com

Each week they showed several short films in an hour. I didn't like all of them, but alot of them were pretty great. The first season didn't really have a host, maybe an occasional guest host. The second season was hosted by Lisa Marie (who we like). Anyway, here's a list of some stuff I've taped off the series.

Faerie Tale Theatre, PBS
IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia

Okay, I never saw much of this and don't remember it well. But anyway, Shelley Duvall hosted it, and each week there was this different faerie tale performed by some really cool actors and stuff. It really seemed more designed to appeal to adults rather than children. Anyway... I'd like to see this stuff sometime, stuff I haven't seen as well as stuff I have... Bernadette Peters was in one installment. And you know, we've always quite liked Bernadette.

Masterpiece Theatre, PBS
IMDb; PBS; TV.com; Wikipedia

I'm afraid I haven't seen alot of this, but I do remember Alistair Cooke hosting this when I was a kid. And I remember Russell Baker taking over later. And I remember liking the theme music, though I think it changed when Russell took over. Also I remember Cookie Monster (as "Alistair Cookie") hosting Monsterpiece Theatre on Sesame Street (Muppet shows). Um, and anyway, I'm sure there've been some good TV movies or miniseries or whatever shown on this....

Mystery!, PBS
IMDb; PBS; TV.com; Wikipedia

Hosted by Diana Rigg, who we've always liked. Well, what to say? A bunch of different British TV movies or miniseries, I guess. Anyway, I haven't seen as much of it as I should have. But it's great stuff....

Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, TNT
IMDb; TNT; TV.com; Wikipedia

I'm afraid I haven't read the original stories, so I can't compare the series to its source material. Anyway, I kinda liked some of the episodes, others not so much. But it was worth watching, anyway. And it wasn't very long, just 8 episodes.... Not sure what else to say.

The Outer Limits
IMDb; official website; TV.com; Wikipedia

I haven't seen much of this, I'm afraid. I've seen much more of the newer, syndicated series (IMDb; Sci-Fi Channel; TV.com) but didn't watch it much in the end. It could be okay at times, but usually not great. The new one, I mean; I don't know about the old one.

The SfM Holiday Network
Retro Junk; SFM Entertainment; Wikipedia

This thing that occasionally came on TV. They'd play movies. It was hosted by Orville Redenbacher. I don't remember it very well, and I don't suppose I saw that much of it- not that it was even on very often, anyway. But still, I do feel a certain degree of nostalgia for it. I remember the theme music, which is also the theme for "Monday Night Football." Of course, I never watch football, but you can't really help but hear things like that while surfing or whatever, so now... it's kind of weird for me to remember this movie anthology and think of football....

The Twilight Zone
IMDb; Sci-Fi Channel; TV.com; Wikipedia

Reruns on Sci-Fi Channel. Especially on New Year's Eve.
I'm sure I haven't seen nearly enough of it. But there are alot of classic episodes that you absolutely have to see (as well as some that weren't that great). It was great for like social commentary and stuff, in a science fictiony kinda way. And it's important as a pop culture reference, particularly in some of the Halloween eps of The Simpsons. There was a remake of the series in the mid-80s (IMDb; Retro Junk; TV.com; Wikipedia) which I remember like a couple episodes of. There was also a new version in 2002, on UPN (IMDb; TV.com; Wikipedia), of which I saw relatively little.

USA Up All Night, USA
IMDb; Wikipedia

I remember watching a very little bit of this when I was in college. I remember Gilbert Gottfried hosting, and I remember Rhonda Shear (who we kinda liked, even if she was rather too porn starrish for our tastes) hosting. (It was quite enjoyable, the way she said the word "up" when speaking the title of the show.) I dunno if I ever watched the show at all after college, but I guess I couldn't have watched it before, because I didn't have cable. Anyway, it was a bunch of crappy, cheesy, campy movies, most of which I wouldn't have really cared about, I guess. The one thing I do remember, though, is that one weekend they played all five "Planet of the Apes" movies, and I stayed up to watch all of them (two on one night, three on the other), since I'd never seen any of them before.

The Wonderful World of Disney
IMDb; Retro Junk; TV.com; Wikipedia

What can I say? It was truly great. I used to watch it on CBC for years, when I was a kid. Got to see all kinds of classic Disney movies and shows from before my time, as well as contemporary stuff. I wish I could see alot of that old stuff, because I don't remember it well. But maybe someday I'll try to start a page for Disney movies that I saw on this series. For now you could see a couple of things from the 80s on my Disney Channel movies page, though that's mostly got more recent movies that weren't on this show.

Oh, and there was some kind of remake of this on ABC for a few years (IMDb; TV.com) which I never really saw much of. Occasionally they might have had something on I kind of wanted to check out, but couldn't because I was watching stuff on other channels, or whatever. I think maybe they still air the new thing occasionally, just not on a regular basis anymore....

Wonderworks, PBS
Everything2

The only installment I really remember is Gryphon (IMDb; Movie Tome), which I kind of liked. A substitute teacher, played by Amanda Plummer, had quite an effect- almost magical- on some inner-city kids. Dunno what else to say about that installment, nor the series in general. But it's a shame I can't find any links for the series at any of the usual websites...
