This first aired in 2005, but I didn't see it until 2025, during my summer of DCOMs. I found it fairly formulaic, but still reasonably enjoyable. I didn't particularly like (or dislike) the main character, but I still found it easy enough to root for her.

There's this teenage figure skater named Katelin Kingsford (Jordan Hinson, who I knew from Eureka, though I didn't recognize her here, probably because it's been years since I saw that show). She is approached by a Russian coach named Natasha Goberman (Cristine Rose, who I knew from Heroes, and I actually did recognize her). Natasha wants to train Katelin, which would require her to attend a boarding school, which her parents can't afford. So Natasha arranges for the school's hockey coach to get Katelin a scholarship to play hockey, which she really doesn't want to do, but has little choice if she wants to pursue her dream of becoming a champion figure skater. Meanwhile, her little brother, Bradley, resents her getting the scholarship, because he's a hockey player himself. So he quits his team to focus on building a battle robot.

Katelin isn't used to having friends, since she only associated with fellow figure skaters, who just saw her as competition, and were mean to her. It doesn't look at first like that will change now that she's attending the new school. None of the girls on the hockey team like her, because she's no good at hockey, and the other girls in the school's figure skating club are just as mean as the skaters she knew back home. She does sort of become friendly with her roommate, a fellow hockey player (who I think was nicknamed "Hollywood"), but Katelin has to keep the fact that she's a figure skater secret from all the hockey players, who hate figure skaters in general. (At one point this is explained by their belief that figure skaters reinforce society's perception that girls can't play hockey.) Um, we don't really get to know too many of the girls on the team. The captain is a girl named Ronnie. And there's a girl nicknamed "Mojo" who stood out to me, both because she's the quirkiest girl on the team and because she's played by Tania Gunadi, of whom I am a fan from other stuff. We also kind of get to know the assistant hockey coach, Spencer, who at first doesn't like Katelin, but eventually befriends her. (He almost seems like a potential love interest, though he's obviously older than Katelin, but I don't know how much older.) At at one point, real life figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi makes a cameo appearance as herself.

Of course, by the end of the movie Katelin has gained the respect and friendship of her fellow hockey players. Then predictably enough, a championship hockey game falls at the same time as a super important figure skating competition, and Katelin has to make a nearly impossible choice. I don't want to say too much about what happens, but she gets some help from Spencer, as well as from Bradley and his robot. And there's a happy ending.

I kind of felt a little bit like Katelin's personality (and narration) reminded me of Cher from Clueless, but I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. I also thought it was weird that her first name was on the back of her hockey jersey, instead of her last name. But I didn't even notice what any of the other players' jerseys said. But anyway, despite the plot being very similar to countless other movies, it's a plot that still works. I was a bit disappointed that Mojo didn't have a bigger role in the movie. And I think it's a shame that Katelin couldn't have befriended any of the figure skaters, who just remained mean to her. I'm sure not all figure skaters are like that. At least Kristi was nice to her, but I still don't care for the portrayal of virtually the entire sport as full of mean-spirited people. And I don't really know what else to say.
