This is Bedingfield's first studio album, released in 2004 in the UK and 2005 in the US. I'm reviewing it in 2025. There are a few different versions of the album, with different track listings. I have the North American reissue, so I'm not sure when it came out or when I got it, but probably 2006. The liner notes contain song lyrics.
1. "These Words": This was the first single in North America and the second single internationally. It's one of the songs I remember and love best by Bedingfield, though I'm not sure if I like it more, less, or the same as the title track. Either way, it's very cool and upbeat and romantic. (I once sampled a bit of this song for an Avatar: The Last Airbender promo I made.)
2. "Single": This was the first single in the UK, and the third single in the US. I don't remembe it at all, but it's not bad. It's kind of the opposite of "These Words", since it's about being single rather than being in love. I'd say the genre falls somewhere between R&B and hip-hop, but also kind of pop.
3. "Unwritten": This was the third single in the UK and the second in the US. It's one of only two songs from the album that I really remember, and I love it. Very upbeat, with a positive message about being yourself and, you know, living your life as best you can. Part of it sounds like gospel, but mostly it's pure, blissful pop.
4. "Silent Movie": This is cool enough, I guess. I don't really understand the meaning, though.
5. "Stumble": This seems to be about feeling awkward around the person you like.
6. "Peace of Me": This is more rock than pop.
7. "If You're Gonna...": This is another rock song.
8. "Drop Me in the Middle": This features singer/rapper Estelle. I think it's cool.
9. "We're All Mad": This is kind of R&B with a dance-pop backbeat.
10. "I Bruise Easily": This is a melancholic ballad about how you can be hurt when you take a chance on love, and it doesn't last.
11. "The One That Got Away": This is kinda fun.
12. "Size Matters": She's talkin' 'bout your heart.
13. "Wild Horses": This is another ballad.
14. "Sojourn": This is a hidden song at the end of track 13, starting more than 3 minutes after the previous song ends. It's about nonconformity, I guess.
Well, all the songs on the album sound good, because Bedingfield has a great voice, and definitely knows how to use it. Maybe I could even get to like some of the songs a lot if I listened to the album a lot, I don't know. For now, I'd rate the two songs I remember a lot higher than any of the other songs. As I said before, I love "These Words" and "Unwritten", but I only like the rest. So my rating of the album as a whole doesn't reflect how I feel about those two songs, both of which I'd probably rate about three hearts.
