Eben

This is a local artist from Maine. There aren't really any links for him; his MySpace page seems to be defunct, which is hardly surprising, considering it's MySpace.

Straight From the County
Bull Moose

This was released in 2009. It's homemade, and originally was sold in a local chain of music stores called Bull Moose, but when I checked the site in 2024 before writing my review, I found that it's no longer available there. And I should mention I usually listen to CDs in a DVD player, but it wouldn't play this one, I had to play it on my actual CD player.

1. A comedic commercial for Katahdin Woodworks, which sponsored the CD.

2. "Mister Man": This song is the only reason I know Eben exists. I heard it on the radio a few times at work, but it was ostensibly by... an artist with a different name, I think it was "Mastah E and Bizzy B" or something like that, I don't remember exactly. So it took me awhile to find out who it was actually by, when I went looking for it years ago. I think I had downloaded an mp3 at some point, but I eventually lost that when my computer died. In 2013, I bought the album and ripped that song, so you can listen to it or download it from my site, if you want. Anyway, it's kind of a rap-style song, but much slower than most rap music. I do think it's mostly a fairly amusing song (particularly if you're from Maine), but some bits are potentially offensive.

3. "I Can't Find Nothin'": This is more of a country or bluegrass style, I think. It's a breakup song, and I guess it's kind of amusing. Just a bit.

4. "Maine Drinking Song": It's exactly what the title says it is. And it's not bad. The musical style... I dunno, kinda sounds like something you might line dance to.

5. "My Dog": Sounds like a loving tribute, but the lyrics describe a pretty poor excuse for a dog.

6. "Taking Over the World": This one's kind of funky.

7. "Lime Green Stretch Pants": I have absolutely no idea what to think about this song. It's just weird.

8. "Can't Get Here from There": This is a Maine-themed take on "I've Been Everywhere". Not bad.

9. "Mainely International Stars": This is sort of glam rock or something, based on Maine having lots of towns named after foreign cities.

10. "In the Desert": This has a vaguely Arabian sound to it. It's about how small the Desert of Maine is.

11. "Massholes": The title is an insult some Mainers use for people from Massachusetts who visit Maine. I'm not sure I could say what style the music is. Kind of funky, maybe. Or soul. Or... something else.

Well, I liked the album more than I expected to. It's kind of fun hearing all the different musical styles done with a Down East accent. And it's all just... you know, mildly amusing. I could imagine some people listening to it more often than I'd want to do, and enjoying it more than I did. But it's not bad, even if I don't expect to remember any of the songs other than "Mister Man".
