This is the fifth movie in the "Conjuring" universe. It came out in 2018, but I didn't see it until 2025. It's a spin-off from The Conjuring 2, and is framed by scenes from that movie. (Well, at least it starts with scenes from that movie, and ends with a new scene that takes place shortly before the first "Conjuring" movie.) I liked it well enough, I guess.

In 1952, in Romania, two nuns approach an ominous room at their abbey. One enters, and is attacked by an unseen force. The other escapes with a key, pursued by a demon that takes the appearance of a nun, and hangs herself to avoid being possessed. Later, a villager called Frenchie finds her body, and moves it to an ice house to preserve it. Meanwhile, the Vatican has somehow gotten wind of this occurrence, and sends a priest named Father Burke and a nun novitiate named Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga, whom I know from American Horror Story) to investigate. They meet Frenchie, and he shows them the body. Burke takes the key from the dead nun's hand.

And... throughout their investigation, a ton of scary stuff happens that I don't want to spoil. I will say that Burke finds some very old books about demons and whatnot. That includes the name "Valak", which I guess is the name of the demon that appears as a ghastly nun, though unless I missed something, the film didn't firmly establish that connection. Anyway... toward the end, Burke, Irene, and Frenchie seem to stop Valak, but that's not really the end of the story. I won't spoil how it really ends. And I don't know what else to say, except that I look forward to seeing the sequel.
