The Un-Gone (8:25)
IMDb; official site; Short of the Week; Simon Bovey

This short film is set in the near future, when travel by teleportation is commonplace. However, it seems that there is an aspect of how the technology works that either is not common knowledge, or that most people never bother to think about, because it only matters in the rare occurrence of a specific kind of malfunction. Anyway, the film focuses on a couple named Julian and Maya Salinger, who are going from Kuala Lumpur to Britain. The reason for their trip, as well as possible plans for the future, hint at various interesting details of the state of the world in their time, but we don't get to learn anything about all that, because it's not the point of the film. The point is the transporter malfunction that happens to Julian, after Maya has successfully made the transit. The nature of the malfunction is then explained to Julian by a man named Kaikora. I don't want to reveal that, though I will say it's rather disturbing, but nevertheless a pretty interesting concept, both technologically and philosophically.
