This is based on the short story "The Open Window," by Saki. I'm sure I read the original story at some point in my youth, most likely in Read Magazine (though I suppose it could have been elsewhere). Anyway, the film has some changes, but the basic concept is the same. It's supposed to be a horror comedy, but I don't really see it as horror... though the comedy is certainly dark.

In the 1950s, a new postman named Frank Nuttel is delivering a certified letter to an Ashley Sappleton. But first he meets Mrs. Sappleton's teenaged niece, Alice, who tells him a story about how a year ago, her aunt's husband and his brother were killed in a mining accident. And... beyond that, I guess I don't want to spoil anything. Again, it's not exactly like the original story, but still I enjoyed the film because it reminded me of the story, so it felt sort of nostalgic, to me. And I quite liked Alice.
