This came out in 2015, but I didn't see it until 2025. At the start of the movie, I thought it was really annoying, and for awhile I wasn't sure I'd keep watching. But I did, and I'm glad. For part of the movie, I thought I'd rate it "meh" at best, but later on I started thinking of rating it one smiley, and in the end, as you can see, I rated it two smileys. Which still isn't a very high rating, but it's good enough. I do want to mention that the aliens in the movie talked in a way that reminds me of a character in my book named Tiejo, and for some time I found it annoying, which made me worry that Tiejo might be that annoying. (I mean, I'd always worried that people could find him kind of annoying, but not this annoying.) But, the aliens I think talk that way even more than Tiejo does, and I eventually got used to it, and it stopped seeming so annoying. So maybe there's hope for Tiejo, after all.
There are these aliens called Boov, who are constantly running away from another alien race called Gorg, who destroy planets. At the start of the movie, the Boov take over Earth to hide from the Gorg, moving all of humanity to Australia, while the Boov keep the rest of the planet for themselves. There's a Boov named Oh (voiced by Jim Parsons), who all the other Boov find annoying. He just wants to be friends with other Boov, but Boov don't have friends, apparently. Anyway, he sends out an invitation to a housewarming party, but of course nobody comes. However, his invitation is accidentally sent to the whole galaxy, which means the Gorg would be able to find the Boov once again. So Oh becomes a pariah and a fugitive, going on the run from the rest of the Boov. Their leader, Captain Smek (Steven Martin), sends a Boov named Kyle to hunt him down. Meanwhile, Oh meets a human girl named Tip (Rihanna), who is sad and mad because the Boov had unwittingly separated her from her mother, who was taken away with the rest of humanity while Tip was left behind in her home. So of course, she and Oh don't get along at first, but Oh fixes up her car, and promises to help her find her mom. Throughout the movie, they gradually come to trust and care for each other.
And that's all I want to spoil about the plot. But I will say there's a happy ending. And something happens between Oh and the Gorg that makes the Gorg stop chasing the Boov, finally. It's something I found fairly predictable, but it was nice to see Oh figure it out for himself, anyway. Other than that... I guess I can say the movie has some good music, interesting animation, good character development, and a mostly decent story. I didn't always find it as funny as it's trying to be, but I did like some of the humor, at least. And it's a fairly heartwarming movie. I kind of wonder if I'd find the beginning less annoying (or even not annoying at all) if I watched it again, but I don't have any plans to do that.
