This came out in 1960 (fifteen years before I was born), and I didn't get around to watching it until 2020 (not long after its 60th anniversary). I suppose I was always vaguely aware of it, but didn't know much about it specifically. I suppose if I'd ever given it any thought, I'd have assumed it was about a cloyingly sweet girl who brings joy to the people she meets, and that's about it. Having watched it now, I'd say- and your mileage may vary on this- that I was wrong only about the "cloying" part. Damned if I didn't end up genuinely liking the girl and all her "gladness." And the movie sure does know how to tug your heartstrings, especially at the end (which put me in mind of It's a Wonderful Life, sort of). Again, your mileage may vary on how much, if at all, you like having your heartstrings tugged, but I'm generally in the "like it" camp.

Anyway, Hayley Mills plays a 12-year-old orphan named Pollyanna, who goes to live with her Aunt Polly, who is quite wealthy and pretty much controls everything in her town (so much so that the town even bears her family's surname, Harrington). I don't want to really go into details of the plot or the various characters. I'll just say that generally there were a lot of unhappy people in Harrington town, and Pollyanna changed them into happy people. Yes, I'd say she did a very good job of that, and she made it look easy, but still believable. And I enjoyed seeing how the characters all changed over time, including, eventually, Aunt Polly. And... that's really all I want to say.
