St. Patrick's Day 2005

March 15 March 16 March 17 March 25

Welp, let's see. What to say about the holiday so far this year? Well, mom sent some things awhile back. There's a little Irish cookbook thing. "Irish Food, Fun & Crafts" which is like an issue of some magazine, looks like something you'd get at the checkout line, y'know? I dunno. Whatever. Looks like it could be interesting if I ever get around to reading anything in there. Gotta try some recipes I guess, but dunno when I will. Probably not this holiday, but then, I'm sure the recipes work all year long.... Also she sent a small Irish bear. It's green and has a green hat with clovers and is holding a big 4-leaf clover. I think that's pretty much it.

There are some things I've been thinking about getting, but they don't bear mentioning just at the moment, since I haven't gotten them yet. I'll mention them if and when I do. But one thing I can say is that as I walked to work today, I stopped into Mickey D's and got me a Shamrock Shake. Hurrah! Oh yes, I've always loved me them things. Amazes me how much they're charging for shakes. I so rarely get a shake, you know. I expected it to be a bit over a dollar, but it cost me $2. For a frickin' small shake! Highway robbery, that is. Still, one can splurge for holidays. Yes yes, I think of $2 as splurging. If we're talking about a frickin' small milkshake. Whatever, I enjoyed it. And I finished it before I got to work.... What else? I bought the Incredibles DVD today, as it was released today, and I had a coupon for $5 off. This has nothing to do with St. Patrick's Day, of course, but still. It's worth celebrating! And I guess having a coupon was sort of lucky....

Oh yes, also today, I moved my pet shamrock, Lenny, from my bedroom to the living room. I've had Lenny for years, you know. He's had his ups and downs... lately he's not doing so well. Cats kept knocking him off the windowsill, he's lost lots of soil and whatnot. Sometime maybe I'll get a smaller pot to put him in. Or not. He's been in bad shape before and rebounded quite nicely, I'm sure he will again. Meanwhile, he lives on the floor, to avoid any further spills. I only occasionally put him up on the windowsill for a little while to get some sunlight... But anyway, moved him to the coffee table today. Hope he likes the change of scenery.

You know I still have the Irish oatmeal I bought for last St. Patrick's Day. I hadn't had any of it in a long time, but I tried some maybe a couple months ago and it seemed like it was still okay. Maybe I'll have some more on Thursday. We'll see. But either way, I'll probably just get rid of the rest of it after this holiday...

Finally, for today... I have worked a bit on my links, out front. Added a few, got rid of a dead one, changed another a bit. Also added a couple links on the drinks page, Shea's and Conway's. I'm planning on trying Conway's this year, dunno about Shea's. Also I want to try Smithwick's, but I couldn't find a site I liked for that. Maybe if I ever try it there'll be a good URL on the bottle. Whatever... Listen, let me know if you ever think of any good sites of any kind to stick on my St. Pat's page, about drinks, music, Ireland, or anything else....

Let's see. Today while watching my Incredibles DVD, I drank coffee from a green mug! Shame there was no Irish cream or anything in it, but it was good coffee, anyway. And did I mention the mug was green? What else? Beth bought Lenny two St. Patrick's Day presents, she said. She gave him one tonight. A bag of potting soil! Hurrah! That shamrock is so lucky.... The other gift she says is for tomorrow. What else? Hmmm. Oh yes, today I bought some Conway's Irish Ale, and tried one bottle of it. It rocks, naturally. I'll save the rest for tomorrow. Well, maybe I won't drink it all tomorrow, I dunno. But no more tonight. And I think that's pretty much all I can think to say about today.

March 17

Let's see. I should've said I've been trying out chocolate Lucky Charms this week, and had some this morning. It's okay I guess, but I prefer regular Lucky Charms. Beth gave Lenny his other gift this morning, a clover decoration on a spike or whatever, to stick in the soil... Also she gave me a big green mug with clovers on it and leprechaun shoes for a base, and it says "Irish at Heart." I've had some coffee in it. And I cooked up the last of the Irish oatmeal, there wasn't as much left as I thought. I had one bowl with cinnamon sugar and one with maple syrup. Started listening to a Chieftains CD, disc one of a 4-disc box set I got a few years back. Didn't have time to finish it, Beth took me out to lunch at an Irish pub, Mavis Winkle's. I had a corned beef sandwich and a glass of ginger ale. Beth would've bought me a beer, but I didn't feel like it. They had Smithwick's, which I still want to try, and green beer of some sort, i guess. I've never had green beer, though I don't imagine there's anything special about it, I still want to try some someday. I just wasn't in the mood this afternoon. On the drive to this place I played a Cranberries CD, got up through track 7. On the way home I played a Chieftains CD, the Long Black Veil (not from the box set), and didn't get far in that. It took less time to get home. Now I'm listening to more of the other Chieftains CD I was listening to earlier. Oh yes, also on the drive, I thought the green traffic lights looked especially green today. Of course, the reds looked especially red and the yellows especially yellow, so whatever. And that's all I can think to say for now, but no doubt later I'll maybe say something more.... Oh listen, the first disc ended, so I just put in the second disc in the set....

Later: I spent awhile watching most of the Incredibles special features. Then I watched the O.C. Oh, I was wearing a green shirt today. And while watching the O.C. I drank some ale. Had two in the course of the hour. At the end I didn't feel drunk or all that good. Thought I'd go to bed. But I didn't. I got online, had more ale, feeling okay now, one bottle left. Wrote an article by one of my characters, AIMHO. Listened to my Clannad CD, and at the moment listening to the Long Black Veil, starting from the song I was on when we got home earlier. And I think that's all to say for now...

March 25

My store had like a bunch of singing rodents. I remember I checked them all out one day, not long prior to St. Patty's Day, I think they were different animals, dressed differently, sang different songs. The only one that really interested me was this one hamster dressed like a leprechaun, who sang "Come on Eileen." You know, in a high-pitched, Chipmunky voice, seemingly with a fake Irish accent, but it's hard to tell such subtleties with high-pitched, Chipmunky voices, y'know? Anyway, I think they were all like $10, and I said to myself I'd wait till after the holiday, surely they'd be reduced. Today while I was in line to buy some Easter candy a few minutes before starting work, I saw some of them things sitting with a sign which I think said they were like $5 each, so I grabbed one. When I looked at my receipt after I got home, it was like $3. Or something. Anyway, I guess it's made by Gemmy, though I couldn't find anything about it, or much of anything, on their website just now. Well, I guess that's pretty much the end of my entries for this year. Although the other day I was in the liquor store and saw some Celtic beer called Curim. I didn't try it, though. In fact I wandered around in there for quite awhile looking at various things I wanted to try before I finally chose something, then they said they don't take cards, just cash. Which I probably was vaguely aware of but forgot. Bunch of damn neo-Luddites. Oh well, so I just didn't get anything. I'll have to try that Curim someday, though. And so many other things.... Though obviously it ain't all Irish stuff, and so there's no need to mention it here....

Anyway, see ya next year!
